About WellStone

WellStone is North Alabama’s largest and most comprehensive nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider.
We serve individuals of all ages—from children to older adults—offering a wide range of mental health and substance use services across 12 facilities in North Alabama. Our offices are located in Huntsville and Cullman, and we care for over 13,000 clients each year.

Our History

WellStone’s roots date back to April 1969, when it was founded as the Huntsville–Madison County Mental Health Board, following the passage of Act 310 by the Alabama Legislature. For over 25 years, the organization operated as the Mental Health Center of Madison County.

In 2014, we rebranded as WellStone Behavioral Health to reflect the expanding scope of our services. Then in 2017, WellStone merged with Mental Healthcare of Cullman, forming what is now WellStone, Inc.

Our Name & Mission

The name WellStone draws inspiration from local history. Before Huntsville became the Rocket City, people visited the area for healing and wellness—especially near what is now Monte Sano State Park, or “Mountain of Health” in Spanish.

  • “Well” symbolizes our focus on wellness over illness.
  • “Stone” reflects the strength and stability we aim to provide.

Together, the name conveys our mission to be a foundation for health and healing.

Our tagline—Connect to Health & Well-Being—speaks to our commitment to helping individuals and families find hope, support, and a brighter future.
